Porter Bear's 1 Year Checkup

A few days ago I took Porter in for his 1 year checkup.  This poor little squirt just won't grow.  He is currently 19.6 pounds which lands him in the 7th percentile.  He is also 29.5 inches long putting him in the 40th percentile for height.  But no worries that noggin of his is in the 90th...he has lots of brains!  They took a blood draw to check for lead and anemia. He was so brave.  He didn't make a peep the entire time.  The doc called yesterday and informed me that his iron levels are super low meaning he is anemic and needs to be put on iron supplements.   So I sat down with Matt to try and figure out what was going on.  We decided that he is just so agreeable all the time.   We will sit down for dinner, put a few things on his plate and then tend to Corbin, or eat ourselves. He would never complain or cry so at the end of the meal we would clean up, and that was that.  So yesterday I tried something new.  I put him in his chair, and sat there right in front of him and fed him yogurt and oatmeal.  I never left I just sat and fed him until he was full....the kid ate an entire serving of oatmeal and half a yogurt...we have been starving him!  Awesome.  So I have been scouring the internet looking for high iron healthy foods.  So I ask you...what healthy (high in iron would be nice) kid friendly foods do you feed your little darlings?

Hi Stef! I read your post and I immediately thought about meatballs or meatloaf. You can mix pretty much anything into the meat, which makes it easy to "hide" veggies. FJ loves to feed herself the small chunks whenever I make it. I also found this webpage with some ingredient ideas for you: http://www.fatfreekitchen.com/nutrition/iron.html

We do a lot of beans here, too. Black beans and Garbanzos (she likes hummus and to feed herself cooked black beans). I know beans are high in iron. Hope you can get his levels up and he'll gain some weight! Wait until he is a teen.. he will grow like a weed and eat everything! Hope you are doing well!

grind spinach and put it into your pasta sauce (deceptively delicious cookbook -- has good idea for kids foods) and OATMEAL and cereal. I had to feed mason oatmeal every night in the bathtub to get him to eat once a day...supplements are always good to just until you can get it up...then stick with it with the food. Anna was low when she was one too. She is just fine and growing now....takes a lot of effort though. Hang in there! :) Lets get together soon!

I just found your blog. I have a petite toddler too (16 months and 16lbs.). We are trying Pediasure as a supplement and it seems to be working. Oh, and by the way, the birthday cake and cupcakes were awesome! :)

Stef, Anya was 15 lbs at a year. She wasn't even on the charts. Maybe it is partly genetic. We tried the pedisure thing as well. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just keep feeding him until he is full. Anya caught up eventually and we never did anything special. Make sure he takes his vitamins.

Davi is the runt in our family. I still have to pretty much force the girl to eat three meals a day. And she is proudly in the 9% at age 2 1/2. It's a never ending battle. Sounds like you've got lots of good ideas though.
I just saw your post about the pics. We will be in Lyman for Thanksgiving and would LOVE to be your guinea pigs if you still need more people. :)

we mix chopped or ground up spinach in lots of pasta sauces or food in general. Meat & Veggies and a daily kids vitamin.
